On 1st of February 2016, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum launched the Shaikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Library. With total investment of AED 1 billion, the library is the biggest in the Arab World. The one million square feet property can facilitate for 42 million visitors annually and will house more than 4.5 million printed, digital and audio books.

Scheduled to open next year, the library includes eight specialized libraries, 1.5 million printed books, 2 million digital books and 1 million audio books. Designed in the shape of an open book on a lectern, the seven- story building will host over 100 cultural and cognitive event every year, a permanent art gallery and a home for specialized institutions that support development of the Arabic language content.

The library targets printing and distributing 10 million books in the Arab World over the next coming few years. It will also host the Dh2.4 million 'Arabic Language Award', launched recently to help people embrace their Arab identity and translating 25,000 international book to Arabic. The library is going to be home for the Arab Reading Challenge.

The Shaikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Library includes a specified center for conservation and restoration of books, manuscripts and documents, a special library for the Al Maktoum collection and a civilization museum.
