Mohammad's love of sport puts nation on world map
Through his extraordinary vision His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has helped transform the emirate of Dubai from a desert town into a major business hub, tourist destination and centre for sporting excellence.
Shaikh Mohammad, who was groomed for leadership by his father, Shaikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, developed an early interest in sport. An accomplished horseman and athlete, his passion for sport knows no bounds and has resulted in many prestigious international sporting events being held in Dubai, including the Dubai Tennis Championships, the Dubai Desert Classic golf tournament, the Dubai Rugby Sevens and the Dubai World Cup.
Throughout his youth, Shaikh Mohammad was actively involved in forward-planning meetings with bankers and scholars and this helped shape his business acumen and vision. However, the special attention and interest he has shown to sport has firmly placed Dubai and the UAE on the international sporting map.
He has always led by example by participating in some of the most challenging endurance races around the world and has encouraged his children and the youth of the UAE to follow in his footsteps. He has provided encouragement and the necessary infrastructure for the UAE youth to take up sport in all forms.
Gruelling races
Competing in gruelling endurance races Shaikh Mohammad has led the UAE team to victory in the European Championship in Spain, Italy and Ireland.
Although he is interested in other sports as well it is horse racing that has remained his passion. Horses have been an inseparable part of his life and have helped shape one of the most iconic sporting theatres in the world in the shape of the multi-million dollar Meydan racecourse, a state-of-the-art racing facility that hosts the world's richest race meeting each March, the $27 million Dubai World Cup.
Shaikh Mohammad's relationship with flat racing began in the late Sixties when together with his brother Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance, he attended the Guineas meeting at Newmarket racecourse in England. Almost ten years later he would have his first taste of international success when Hatta won a race at Brighton racecourse. That victory fuelled his desire for the sport, but it was not until he established the Godolphin stable in 1994 that the world would feel the scale of his passion and commitment to horses and racing.
Today Godolphin can boast of being one of the largest and most successful racing stables in the world having won close to 1,900 races in 12 different countries. It has won almost every major horse race in the world and with it several prestigious Eclipse Awards.
